Q&A: Meet Ian Henery
by Southside | Aug 1, 2019 | China-Town, News
Stacks Image 258478
Hi Ian, tell us a little bit about yourself…
I am the Managing Director of multi-award winning Ian Henery Solicitors.  We have 3 offices, two of which are in Southside in Hurst Street and Bromsgrove Street.  We are the UK members of Winteam500 Law Group based in Beijing with over 100 branches worldwide.  We also run an estate agency and have been in Southside for 9 years.  My firm is an ABS with 3 Chinese Malaysian directors. We work as a team; there is no “i” in the word “team”.  I am very lucky to be blessed with such talented co-directors.  The secret of my success was to recruit Chinese Malaysian lawyers.

Describe your job in three words.
Client service satisfaction.

How did you first get into your career/ what’s your background?
I was formerly a teacher and freelance journalist.  I wanted a challenge, so I converted my Joint Bachelor of Arts with Honours into a law degree and took the Law Society Finals Exams. I had been a member of the Cambridge University Officer Training Corps and decided that the Army was not for me, and I was offered a training contract in Singapore with a multi-national law firm but the call of Birmingham was strong.

I was extremely fortunate that my Chinese Malaysian wife agreed to plant the seeds of our family and business with me in Birmingham. I would have been lost without her.  When I count my blessings I count her 3 times.  I am a lucky man and I know it.

Can you tell us something about yourself that we might not know?
I spent 11 years volunteering as a scout leader, and I was also Assistant District Commissioner for Development in Sutton Coldfield before being offered a commission in the Royal Air Force Air Cadets – I am currently on probation and go before the Royal Air Force Commissioning Board in November.

What does your average day involve?
My day starts at 6am when I check emails that have come through during the night.  Then, I feed my free range chickens and dog before serving my wife a cup of coffee in bed. I then go to court or client meetings.

I do business administration and post articles on Best of UK (I run 4 digital platforms for Best of UK which is the fastest-growing franchise in the UK), and I usually work through lunch to see clients, peruse documents, return telephone calls, supervise staff, check up on the activities of all 3 offices and answer any queries that have arisen during the day – and promptly deal with them – before returning to court.

Upon returning to the office, I’ll check all mail, return all phone calls and emails, supervise staff and see clients.  I leave office for 6pm to spend some time with children before working from home, attending business networking meetings, marketing events or activities with the Royal Air Force Air Cadets. On average, 12 hours a day is devoted to fee earning and client care.

What do you think are the most important things to successfully running your own business?
Attention to detail, attention to detail, attention to detail – I cannot overstate this enough. There is no point having a great product or service if you ignore the small print.

What has been a personal career highlight?
Winning Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award for my pro bono work for women seeking to exit the sex industry, drug addiction and also vulnerable families who had survived domestic abuse.  As a lawyer I wanted to put something back into the community. I won another award in this area by Birmingham Law Society for Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year.

What advice would you give to somebody just starting out in law?
Get work experience in a firm that specialises in the area you want to go into and develop networking skills.

Alongside your legal career you have a passion for poetry, can you tell us a little bit more about that?
I am a former Walsall Poet Laureate (2012 – 2015) and Sutton Coldfield Community Games Poet Laureate (2016). I have performed at four festivals this year including the Wolverhampton Literature Festival and the Nottingham Poetry Festival with Poets Against Racism.  I have been sponsored by Red Moon Brewery at the Rock the Beacon Festival in Birmingham (3 – 4th August) where I am appearing on both days with Poets Against Racism and events in the Autumn with West Midlands` TUC Stand Up To Racism. I am also currently commissioned to deliver poetry workshops for vulnerable families recovering from addiction in Wolverhampton.

What do you think Birmingham and the Southside area offers visitors from further afield?
Gay Village, Theatre Land and Chinatown – diversity and inclusivity on display.  A bit of a winning combo, wouldn’t you say?

What made you want to work in Birmingham?
I have always been linked to Birmingham’s legal scene.  When I was working as a paralegal I ran Birmingham’s biggest immigration and nationality department for two years.  The skyline has changed and I have witnessed massive Chinese investment into Birmingham.  Our clients want a boutique law firm where they can instruct Chinese-speaking lawyers who understand their culture.

What are your favourite things about working in Southside?
The food – I’m vegan and love the choice of Chinese vegan food that is available in Southside.

Where are your favourite local Southside hotspots to spend time?
Birmingham Hippodrome – great café, great exhibitions, great people.

Favourite place to tuck into something nice to eat or enjoy a drink?
Café Soya in Hurst Street because it’s vegan and right next to my office in the Arcadian Centre.

What excites you about the future of Southside?
I am really pleased that Julia (our BID Manager) has come back to Southside – without Julia, Southside would be like a glass of coke but without the bubbles.

Licensing Law - License to Thrill
Birmingham, being the second city after London, has become a thriving and booming business industry, attracting people from a diverse background to the thousands of businesses in the area.   Businesses from food outlets and clubs to pubs and nightlife attractions all have one denominator - they require licenses to operate.  Without the correct license obtained from Birmingham City Council they run the risk of their businesses being suspended or, worse, shut down.  The array of licenses is wide-reaching, from permitting alcohol to be sold to the installation of CCTV cameras, permitting dancing at your venue and, for a majority of businesses, a "late night license".

MARCH 2015

Walsall Solicitor, Ian Henery, is in line for 2 top legal awards from Birmingham Law Society at an awards night due to be held at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham, on 19th March 2015.
As well as the awards, the event is also an opportunity for the region`s legal sector to join together for an evening of celebration over a 4 course dinner.  There will be an after dinner speech by special guest Brian Moore, who won 64 caps for England and is now a BBC pundit and sports columnist for the Daily Telegraph.
Ian Henery, Managing Director of Ian Henery Solicitors in Willenhall, has been shortlisted for 2 awards: Corporate Social Responsibility/Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year and also Partner of the Year.
"I am the only solicitor from Walsall or the Black Country shortlisted for any award in the 11 categories on the night for the Legal Awards 2015", said Ian Henery "which covers categories such as Barrister of the Year, International Lawyer of the Year and Law Firm of the Year.  I have been up against some fierce competition just to get shortlisted in the Oscars of the West Midlands` legal world but it would be nice to win in both categories on behalf of Walsall".
The Legal Awards 2015 showcases the very best that the West Midlands` legal sector has to offer: from talented trainees to brilliant barristers.  "The  Awards recognise and reward the achievements of both firm and individuals" said Eileen Schofield, President of the Birmingham Law Society, "over the past 12 months".
A judging panel of independent judges considered the nominations received and made decisions based on the information submitted and then produced a shortlist of the top 5 candidates in the 11 categories which are Trainee Solicitor of the Year, Barrister of the Year, Paralegal of the Year, Chartered Legal Executive of the Year, Associate Solicitor of the Year, International Lawyer of the Year, Partner of the Year, Corporate Social Responsibility/Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year, Law Firm of the Year (sole practitioner up to 4 partners), Law Firm of the Year (5 - 15 partners) and Law Firm of the Year (16 plus partners).
There was then an interview stage and shortlisted candidates were invited to attend before a panel of judges at Clarke Willmott Solicitors in Birmingham.
"Ian appeared on Monday 2nd March before a judging panel of Michael Ward, Senior Partner of Gateley", said Practice Manager Bernard Yoong of Ian Henery Solicitors, "plus John Crabtree OBE, Chairman, White & Black, The Hon Mr Justice Keehan QC and Neil Rami, CEO, Marketing Manager for his interview on being shortlisted for Partner of the Year".
Ian Henery`s achievements in the past 12 months has included opening a 3rd office in China Town, becoming a member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia whilst also juggling commitments to charitable work as Walsall Poet Laureate, Poet in residence of Walsall Parish Church and the White House in Dudley for Cancer Support.
On Tuesday 3rd March there was another judging panel at Clarke Willmott Solicitors in Birmingham, this time for Corporate Social Responsibility/Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year.
"The whole experience", said Ian, "was like going before the judges on Dragons Den on the television.  It was very nerve-wracking.  You get grilled for 15 minutes.  The only question I was not asked was my inside leg measurement".
In the past 12 months Ian`s achievements have included work with the Willenhall Youth & Community Centre, the charity Bridging the Gap in Willenhall, the Willenhall School of Hope, the Birmingham Chinese Community Centre and running free legal clinics across the West Midlands.
"In my time", said Ian Henery, "I have run legal clinics for survivors of domestic violence, women wanting to exit the sex industry or drug addiction.  The focus has been on empowerment for these service users.  I have always believed in the mantra "what goes around comes around" and the importance of putting something back into society.  I was surprised to be shortlisted for not one but 2 categories in these prestigious awards because I haven`t been doing anything different - this is just the way I operate".
Last year a television company contacted Ian to record a pilot TV show based on legal work in the West Midlands.  For one day a television camera followed Ian around the Black Country, China Town and Birmingham.  In the end the footage was not used and another pilot was commissioned which became Benefit Street.
"I was disappointed", said Ian "because it would have been visually interesting - the Black Country juxtaposed with China Town and the skyline of Birmingham, over dubbed with urban poetry".
In the past Ian has appeared on Legal TV, local radio and he has written articles for  various newspapers and magazines.  "The TV pilot was very exciting", said Ian "because I had a creative input and China Town looked good on film as a contrast to Dudley Castle and Willenhall".
The highlight of the past 12 months for Ian Henery was the festivals  he supported at the Black Country Living Museum to promote his last book, Wildfire Through Staffordshire with Mapseeker Archive Publishing.
"Performing poetry at the coal mine and the Workers` Institute was a dream come true", said Ian "because I am the grandson of a coal miner.  My Grandpa`s daily work pattern was miles underground "in the thick" where he braved explosions, gas, flooding and being buried alive.  He endured all of that to feed his family.  My coal face is Walsall Magistrates Court or in front of a computer.  It is nothing compared to my Grandpa.  I just wish he could see me at the International Convention Centre later this month.  I think he might be proud of his grandson".
And who can say because love never dies.

21st November 2013 - Ian Henery Solicitors Limited secures Law Society's new quality mark.

Ian Henery Solicitors Limited in Willenhall and Birmingham City Centre has secured membership to the Law Society's Conveyancing Quality Scheme - the mark of excellence for the home buying process.

Ian Henery Solicitors Limited underwent rigorous assessment by the Law Society in order to secure CQS status, which marks the firm out as meeting high standards in the residential conveyancing process.

Law Society President Lucy Scott-Moncrieff said that the Law Society introduced CQS to promote high standards in the home buying process.

"CQS has established itself as the quality mark of the home-buying sector and enables consumers to identify practices that provide a quality residential conveyancing service. With so many different conveyancing service providers out there CQS helps home-buyers and sellers seek out those that can provide a safe and efficient level of service."

Ian Henery, Managing Director says: Ian Henery Solicitors Limited is delighted to have secured CQS status. Buying and selling a home can be a stressful time. Choosing a solicitor to help in that process just got easier. By looking for a CQS firm likeIan Henery Solicitors Limited the public can seek out a firm that has proved its commitment to quality.

“The overall beneficiaries will be clients who use Ian Henery Solicitors Limited when buying a home. They will receive a reliable, efficient service as recognised by the CQS standard."

The scheme requires practices to undergo a strict assessment, compulsory training, self reporting, random audits and annual reviews in order to maintain CQS status. It is open only to members of the Law Society who meet the demanding standards set by the scheme and has the support of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, the Building Societies Association, Legal Ombudsman and the Association of British Insurers.
